ㄱ + ㅏ = 가 consonant + vowel
ㄱ + ㅏ + ㄴ = 간 consonant + vowel + final consonant
ㅇ + ㅏ = 아 ㅇ is silent at the start
강 = gang ㅇ sounds like ng at the end

Batchim is the final consonant under a syllable block. It changes how a word is read, so treat it as part of the sound.
